he Supreme Court of Liberia has cleared Grand Cape Mount and Bomi counties Senators- elect Cllr. Varney Sherman and Mr. Morris Saytumah and asked the National Elections Commission to certificate the two men in order to take their respective seats in the Liberian Senate.

The ruling handled down today in a jam packed courtroom comes after months of legal wrangling involving the Senators- elect and two defeated candidates in a December 20 senatorial elections.

In its ruling on Tuesday, the court said the National Elections Commission was not in error to declare Cllr. Sherman and Mr. Saytumah as winners of the polls in their respective counties.

Associate Justice Sie-A-Nyene Youh has meanwhile ordered the clerk of court to immediately communicate with the elections commission to certificate Mr. Sherman and Mr. Saytumah in order to allow them take their seats at the Senate.

Cllr. Sherman who is the chairperson of the ruling Unity Party was prevented from taking his seat due to a complaint of prohibition filed by his opponent and defeated candidate Fodee Kromah. Mr. Kromah through his lawyers argued that the poll was marred by irregularities and fraud, an allegation Cllr. Sherman and his legal team denied.

The National Elections Commission (NEC) maintained that the polls were free, fair and transparent, thus ruling out the allegations made by Mr. Kromah.

Defeated and former Bomi County Senator Lahai Lansanah also prayed the Supreme Court to halt the certification of Mr. Morris Saytumah as winner of the December 20 poll. Mr. Lansanah protested that the election was marred by fraud.

But the NEC has since dismissed the accusations and declared Mr. Saytumah as the winner of Bomi County senatorial election.
