MONROVIA, November 28 (LINA) -The Liberia National Police (LNP) is calling on contestants of the December 16 Special Senatorial Election to inform the police in advance of their planned campaigns to ensure police protection.

According to Police Spokesman Sam Collins, this is intended to avoid a repeat of the Wednesday, November 26, violent confrontation between rival supporters of senatorial candidates George Weah of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) and independent candidate Robert Sirleaf.

In an interview with the Liberia News Agency Thursday, Collins assured that the LNP is committed to providing security protection for senatorial candidates in the forthcoming special senatorial election.

He emphasized that the LNP is under statutory obligation and will do all to protect lives and properties within Liberia’s borders, including political aspirants.

The Police spokesman’s statement comes in the wake of Wednesday’s violent confrontation between supporters of George Weah and Robert Sirleaf in the PHP Community in central Monrovia.

The skirmishes were brought under control by riot police.
