Golden Veroleum Liberia (GVL) on Wednesday concluded a week long social and environmental assessment survey in Tarjuowon Statutory District, Sinoe County. The survey was conducted in 22 communities to ascertain the need of rehabilitating hand pumps in the district.

Outcome of the social and environmental survey shows the need for GVL to rehabilitate 14 hand pumps in communities in Tarjuowon—Bioh’s, Unification, Sonouhn’s, Plaindalebo, Bestnewlue, Poblen’s and Wiah’s—according to a GVL news release Thursday.

During the assessment, GVL Community Affairs and Environmental Sustainability team also identified the need for the construction of two hand pumps, one in Poblen’s and another in Wiah’s, the release further noted.

GVL Assistant Manager for Social Sustainability and Community Affairs, Willie Chea said the rehabilitation and construction of hand pumps in targeted communities would afford citizens and residents an opportunity to access safe drinking water for survival.

“We realized many of the people hand pumps and wells are damaged and non-functional. So, GVL has decided to provide this basic necessity of life to communities in Tarjuowon District,” Chea was quoted in the release.

He said the initiative by GVL would not only provide safe drinking water, but also reduce the risk of people getting infected with waterborne diseases, such as cholera and diarrhea.

“The survey has shown that almost all of the hand pumps and wells in Tarjuowon have gone far below water level while many of them are not functional, our team will soon start with the rehabilitation and construction process to start providing again safe drinking water for our people. We care about the communities in which we operate and are committed to improving their lives. This is the right thing to do,” Chea added.
