Senate Mandates Probe Into Public Sector Salary Discrepancies

MONROVIA, January 22 (LINA) - The Liberian Senate has mandated three of its committees to review salary discrepancies in the public sector and recommend remedies for a merit-based salary structure.

The committees are Civil Service; Rules, Order and Administration; and Ways, Means and Finance.
 
The decision was taken based on a communication from Bong County Senator Jewel Howard Taylor dated January 21 and addressed to Presiding Officer Dan Morias and members of the body.
 
According to the letter, Taylor indicated that though her findings are yet to be completed, she “believes that the current system of remuneration in the country is unequal, de-motivating and serves as the silent source of conflict in work places.”
 
 “As we are aware, the issues of wage discrepancies and benefit payments in the public sector has lingered on and continues to raise questions centered on perceived unfairness from one administration to the next,” she indicated.
 
Even though it was not fully debated by the body, most senators hoped that the plenary would design measures to foster equitable compensation, job security, social justice, professional and academic competence, and the quest for career development.
