Lower, Upper Houses Concur On New Ministry

MONROVIA, October 2 (LINA) - The House of Representatives on Thursday concurred with the Liberian Senate to pass the Act establishing the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.

Of the 39 Representatives present in Thursday’s Session, 28 voted for, one against and two abstained, while 8 other lawmakers were out of the Chambers during the voting process.

The lawmakers voted after the Joint Committees on Gender & Child Development, Health & Social Welfare and Judiciary submitted their report to plenary following two weeks of scrutiny, the Liberia News Agency reports.

With the concurrence, all provisions of the Executive Law, Title 12, and Liberian Code of the Reversed Law are hereby repealed and related functions and powers as provided for under Chapter 30 with respect to health are transferred to the Ministry of Health & Social Welfare.

Meanwhile, the Joint Committees have submitted an Act to amend Chapter 38 of the Ministry of Gender and Development of the Executive Law, to establish the Ministry of Gender, Children & Social Protection.

At the same time, members of the Lower House have unanimously passed an Act criminalizing concealing information about persons or group of persons with contagious infectious diseases in Liberia.

The contagious diseases include Ebola, Gonorrhea, Hepatitis B, HIV/AIDS, Lassa Fever, Leprosy, Tuberculosis (TB), Measles, Meningitis, Typhoid Fever and Yellow Fever, among others.

Plenary has mandated the Chief Clerk, Mildred Sayon to forward the instrument to the Liberian Senate for concurrence.
