MONROVIA, February 6(LINA) - President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has underscored the need for small, quality civil servants in government ministries and agencies to ensure better salaries for workers.

The Liberian leader made the statement Friday when she launched the Public Sector Modernization Project (PSMP) held at C. Cecil Dennis Auditorium at the Foreign Ministry in Monrovia.

President Sirleaf indicated that pay, payroll management, performance and pension are   essential for the public sector reform to enhance development in ministries and agencies of government.

She noted that payroll management is a difficult thing to do in most government ministries and agencies, adding “that is why the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning is still processing checks.”

The president pointed out that the financial system in these ministries and agencies cannot be trusted to carry out the process, although government wants them to manage their payroll.

“I am glad that this program has established a grading system so that those who work hard can be rewarded by moving to a greater level of responsibility,” she added.

The Chief Executive stressed that professionalizing and de-politicizing the public sector is the key to maintaining professional civil servants.
