House Committee Seeks Autonomous Status For CARI

MONROVIA, November 28 (LINA) -The House Committee on Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has submitted a bill entitled: “An Act to establish the Central Agricultural Research Institute (CARI), Republic of Liberia as an Autonomous Agency” to Plenary for enactment.

 

The Committee noted that when given autonomous status, the CARI will be a center of excellence for the generation, promotion and dissemination of sustainable agriculture technologies aimed at improved productivity, value addition and job creation.

According to the Liberia News Agency, the Committee also opined that the institute will offer laboratory and consultation services to the public, conduct broad-based research on food and cash crops, livestock, fish, land and water management.

The Bill, which was introduced in Session on Thursday, November 27, was signed by six of the nine members of the Committee, including its Chairperson Josephine George-Francis of Montserrado County.

Others are George Mulbah and Edward Karfiah of Bong County, Mary Karwor of Grand Bassa County and Alex Grant of Grand Gedeh as well as Thomas Fallah of
Montserrado County.

Following the reading of the instrument, it was sent to the Committee on Agriculture, Judiciary, Ways, Means and Finance for review with the mandate to report to Plenary in two weeks.
