Schools in Liberia will not reopen on February 2, rather February 13, according to the government on Friday.

A government release: “The Ministry of Education announces that the registration of students and the preparation for the reopening of schools will continue until February 13,

2015, in order to allow parents and students to better prepare for the reopening of schools.

“Meanwhile, the Ministry will ensure that efforts to create awareness across the country on the safety protocols, logistics, health, and training requirements are in place for the safety of our students and school administrators.

“The public is hereby informed that actual teaching will begin on Monday, February 16, 2015. We encourage all public and private schools to continue the activities leading to the reopening of schools.”

The Liberian parliament on Thursday called for the extension of the date to March 2 to give parents ample time to prepare to shoulder financial obligations.
The 2014 school year was disrupted due to Ebola and there is an ensuing debate on the most convenient time at which the government should reopen schools.
