The House of Representatives Tuesday unanimously resolved to invite the Minister of Education to show reasons why most trained teachers are not assigned to public schools across the country.

Plenary has, therefore, instructed the Committee on Education to ensure that Education Minister Etmonia Tarpeh appears before it on February 6 as the issue is crucial and requires immediate redress.

According to the Liberia News Agency, the lawmakers reached the decision after Chief Clerk Mildred Sayon read a letter in session from Representative Johnson Chea of River Gee County, complaining that some trained teachers are yet to be assigned by the Education Ministry.

Chea argued that for over three to four years teachers have completed courses at training institutions, including the Kakata Rural Teacher Training Institute (KRTTI) in Margibi County and the Webbo Teachers Training Institute in River Gee County, but have not been employed and deployed.

He stated that most of the teachers currently teaching in public schools are high school graduates lacking the credentials to mold the minds of the young people who are the “future leaders” of Liberia.

Meanwhile, Chea has claimed that some trained teachers who are fortunate to be assigned at schools by the ministry are not on government payroll, negatively impacting their lives and classroom performance.
