MONROVIA, October 11 (LINA) – The Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Health, Peter Coleman, is appealing to President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to consider reinstating the
dismissed president and secretary general of the National Health Workers Association of Liberia (NHWAL), to avert any further go-slow-actions by health workers.
In an interview with the Liberia News Agency Friday, Dr. Coleman pointed out that the request is a reminder to the President who had earlier promised health workers that she would consider the reinstatement of their colleagues.
According to the lawmaker, in times like these, continued conflicts between the government and the NHWAL will seriously impede efforts to eradicate the deadly Ebola virus, which is ravaging the country.
He said as front liners in the fight against Ebola, the plight of health workers needs to be adequately addressed as they are already planning another go-slow action if their request is not granted.
“I am begging the President to please see about our health workers quickly so as not to embarrass the concerted effort of the government and its international partners, including the sub-region, who are coordinating to contain and stop the transmission chain of the Ebola Virus Disease”, he said.
It can be recalled that before the Ebola outbreak in March, health workers had on numerous occasions staged go-slow actions for reasons ranging from salary increment, reinstatement of their dismissed colleagues and hazard allowances.
