MONROVIA, October 17 (LINA) -The European Union has renewed its commitment to play a leading role in food and nutrition security for the millions of children under five threatened by malnutrition.

A statement jointly issued by Commissioner Andris Piebalgs of Development aid and Kristalina Georgieva of Humanitarian Aid on Thursday in commemoration of World Food Day, noted that the focus is for those affected by the conflicts in Syria, Central African Republic, South Sudan, Mali and Somalia.

Also targeted include those whose livelihoods are taken away from them by the growing impact of climate change, the EU statement said.

“We must do more, and we will. In the next seven years, food and nutrition security and agriculture will be a priority in our cooperation with more than 60 of our partner countries,” the statement noted.

It said this will mean focusing on the most off-track countries and using the most effective financing mechanisms to reduce mortality related to hunger and under-nutrition, such as the EU Food facility from which almost 60 million people have already benefited.
