Putuken, which is located across the Huffman River, southwest of Harper, was in the past used by government as a Correction and Rehabilitation Center in Maryland County, but the prison facility became dysfunctional long before the Liberian civil war.

In an Interview with the Liberia News Agency Saturday, an elder of the town, Joseph Allison, said Putuken has a population of a thousand people, but lacks basic social services.

He disclosed that residents lack school, medical facility and safe drinking water, noting that they have to cross the river into Harper daily to seek their livelihood.

“Children from the town cross the river during the rainy season to go to primary school in Harper,” he added.
