MONROVIA, March 1 (LINA) – The Liberian Senate has granted Finance and Development Planning Minister Amara Konneh permission to travel to Washington D.C. following a request made by the Minister on Tuesday.

Konneh, in a communication addressed to the Secretary of the Liberian Senate, requested the Plenary to afford him the opportunity to travel to the U.S to participate in a global forum which runs from March 1 to 12.

Konneh explained that he was also travelling to the U.S to hold consultations with the World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other key partners aimed at securing budgetary support for the current and next fiscal years.

He reminded the Senate that projected revenues in the National Budget for the current fiscal year have been revised downward by an estimated US$69.9 million, a situation that was occasioned by the decline in the prices of the country’s primary commodities, as well as the impact of the Ebola virus.

He reiterated regrets for the tone of his communication earlier to that body which triggered contempt charges against him, and indicated that he remains committed to mending his relationship with the Senate.

It can be recalled that the Liberian Senate last week re-summoned Minister Konneh to appear before plenary for hearing into a motion for reconsideration filed by Grand Gedeh County Senator Alphonso Gaye after the Minister was held in contempt for forwarding a letter to that body which they termed as disrespectful.

Konneh earlier apologized to the Liberian Senate for the act, but some members of the Senate insisted that the Minister’s action was unacceptable, and that he should be reprimanded.
