MONROVIA, December 15 (LINA) - An official of the National Port Authority (NPA) has disclosed that the NPA under the stewardship of Managing Director Matilda Parker has made significant gains in protecting the gateway of Liberia’s economy from the Ebola virus with an excellent record of zero case since the outbreak of the disease.

NPA Public Relations Manager Malcolm Scott said although Liberia is not yet free from the virus, the realization of zero Ebola case at the nation’s seaports in the face of the negative impact of the virus on the country’s economy, came as a result of various screening measures instituted by the NPA to protect seaports in the country.

He made the statement in an interview with the Liberia News Agency (LINA) in Monrovia over the weekend.

According to Scott, the Ebola attack on Liberia could have caused serious starvation and breakdown in the channel that supplies the
country’s staple food “rice” and other essential goods if the virus had hit the NPA which serves as the gateway to the country’s economy.

He indicated that such a situation could also have discouraged vessels from other countries from docking at the port and paralyzed the
country’s import sector.

Meanwhile, Scott has disclosed that the US-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have awarded the NPA Managing Director,
Ms. Matilda Parker with certificates of achievement for completing series of training in disease prevention and control.
