GBARNGA, September 7 (LINA) - The Commander of the Police Criminal Services Department (CSD) of the Bong County Detachment, Alvin James, is calling on the National Legislature to enact a law the will make the illegal use of drug a non-bailable offence.
He claimed that the drug laws of the country are “weak”, requiring them to be strengthened by making the practice a non-bailable offence.
Speaking in an interview Sunday with the Liberia News Agency, the CSD official noted that as a result of weak laws, criminals are been recycled simply because they have the right to be bailed while trial is going on in court.
He cited the recent July 15 raid in which 10 persons were arrested and charged with drug abuse and illegal possession of narcotic substances, but yet nearly all of them are still in communities were mountains of complaints come from daily.
Commander James note that since taking over the command in 2008 hundreds drugs dealers and users have been arrested and sent to court, but bailable provisions have not done much to deter them.
“While we remain committed in performing our constitutional responsibilities I want lawmakers to see reason to enact a law that will totally discourage drug use and trade in the country,” said James.
