MONROVIA, November 13 (LINA) - The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Program (WFP) have pledged to support the Liberian Government to improve food security and the overall economic growth of the country.

The pledge was contained in a joint statement read by WFP Deputy Country Director Wurie Alghyassim during the World Food Day Celebration National Stakeholders Dialogue held Thursday under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with the FAO and WFP at the Monrovia City Hall.

Alghyassim said the two UN agencies are working to enhance interventions in agriculture, fisheries, livestock, food through humanitarian support as well as capacity development of farmers and partners.

According to the deputy WFP Country Director, actors are still looking for a better approach to improve the population’s living standard.

Mr. Alghyassim observed that social protection programs are very important for ordinary Liberians, especially women, children and youth who need support from the government and partners.

He said to achieve sustainable impact, coordination among all actors working in support of the government along with effective involvement of the people of Liberia is crucial.

Mr. Alghyassim noted that the FAO and WFP and implementing partners in support of the Ministry of Agriculture and partners, are focusing on interventions within the framework of the four government priory areas in agriculture, including improving food security and nutrition, especially for vulnerable groups such as pregnant and lactating mothers and children under-five.
