MONROVIA, April 12 (LINA) – Sasstown, the administrative seat of Jrao Statutory District in Grand Kru County, is experiencing fish shortage, according to sources close to the sector.

The sources said as a result of the situation, fishermen in Sasstown City have increased the price of fish, with a pile of five fishes that sold for L$50 now going for not less than L$100.
Fisherman Sleyon Nyenbeh told the Liberia News Agency in an interview via mobile phone Saturday that the situation is due to the lack of sufficient fishing materials.
Nyenbeh said fishermen in the area are in dire need of nets, fishing hooks, lines and lead as well as motorboat engines, among others.
He said to adequately supply customers from Buah, Jloah and Dorbor Statutory Districts, who usually converge on Sasstown to purchase fish, basic fishing gears must be made availability.
Meanwhile, Nyenbeh is appealing to the Ministry of Agriculture, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and other relevant organizations to come to the aid of the fishing sector in the district.
Nyenbeh assured that with the availability of fishing hooks, lines, nets and other accessories, the fishermen will be able to catch more fish and eventually reduce the price of the commodity in the district.
The fish shortage also comes in the wake of the banning of plastic nets for fishing in Liberian waters by the government.
