In a Position Statement presented to the President by the leadership of Lofa University Students Association (LUSA), the rehabilitation of the agricultural training center in Vahun and other primary and secondary institutions in the district was highlighted.

President Sirleaf appeared on an early morning ‘phone-in’ show on Radio Vahun on Wednesday, February 19, to discuss issues affecting the district.  Of all the challenges faced by the people of Vahun as a result of prolonged isolation from the rest of the county due to bad roads, all participating callers on the show stressed the need for intervention in education.  President Sirleaf assured Vahun residents that she will work along with their lawmakers, local and student leaders to improve the educational system of the district.

During their interaction with the second Liberian President ever to visit them, the people of Vahun presented the re-opening of the Bomi-Gbarpolu-Vahun road and the cessation of elicit sawing and mining in their forests as other priority areas (in addition to education) for President Sirleaf’s swift intervention.

Vahun is one of six districts of Lofa County. It has been repeated cutoff from the rest of the county due to bad road and a mountainous landscape. President Sirleaf spent the first night of her tour of Lofa County in Vahun, becoming the first Liberian President to sleep in this provincial town that has huge economic and security relevance owing to its traditional ties with Sierra Leone.
