MONROVIA, October 7 (LINA) – A leading Liberian medical doctor has urged citizens to limit refined carbohydrates, sweets, alcohol, animal fats, vegetable oil and processed food which generate toxin that weakens the body’s defense system when consumed excessively.

Dr. Billy Johnson, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the John F. Kennedy Medical Hospital, also emphasized the need for Liberians to live healthily and build a strong immune system which is necessary to fight against the hemorrhagic Ebola virus.

Dr Johnson added that Liberians should incorporate more soluble and insoluble fiber, which are “very rich nutritional diets, into daily meals consumption in an effort to substantially build the body’s defense system against viruses.”

He spoke Tuesday at the Ministry of Information regular Ebola briefing held in the conference hall of the ministry in Monrovia.

Johnson said the immune system serves as the body’s defense against external invasion from diseases such as AIDS, Ebola and other dangerous illnesses which can only be strongly resisted if the immune system is well developed.

He observed that Ebola has no known cure but a strong immune system can aid the body against the replication of the virus which allows a person to seek supportive treatments that will lead to survival.

Speaking further, Dr. Johnson said the regular consumption of green and leafy vegetables enables the body to further suppress the invasion of other diseases such as cancer and heart attack.

“The more leafy dark green vegetables you eat daily, the more your body will be able to resist cancer and other diseases, the easiest way to eat more vegetables is to prepare them in delicious soup that you like,” Dr. Johnson said.
