MONROVIA, December 24 (LINA)-The Deputy Information Minister for Public Affairs, Isaac Jackson, has clarified that President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is not unpopular, as is being speculated in the media.

He said President Sirleaf is rather a true champion of Liberia’s democracy as evidenced by the fact that her regime continues to exhibit respect for human rights and uphold genuine civil liberties.

Deputy Minister Jackson made the clarification at the Ministry of Information daily Ebola press conference held at the ministry in Monrovia Wednesday.

Jackson’s statement came days after the holding of the special senatorial elections in which Robert Sirleaf lost to opposition politician George Weah.

Jackson described such assertion as “erroneous”, noting that the mid-term senatorial elections cannot serve as an indictment of the government because the chairman and other candidates of the ruling party won the polls in counties in which they contested.

He also observed that that President Sirleaf’s democratic credential has brought recognition to Liberia by the rest of the world.
