Government Announces Liberian Scholar, Dr Robtel Neajai Pailey as the 177th Independence Day Orator, releases calendar of events for this year’s commemoration

The Government of Liberia has announced Dr Robtel Neajai Pailey as the orator for this year’s Independence Day commemoration.

Dr Pailey is a native of Liberia. She holds a PhD in Development Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies of the University of London, United Kingdom. Dr. Pailey is, currently, Assistant Professor of International Social and Public Policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science in the Department of Social Policy.

“The Government is elated to have Dr. Pailey address the nation,” Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah said. “She is a highly educated Liberian with over 20 years of combined personal and professional experience in multiple sectors including the media, public sector, multilateral, regional and community-based organizations,” the Minister said. “We are confident Dr Pailey will deliver an enlightening message to the nation and we hope to draw inspirations from her good works,” Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah.

Dr. Pailey, who is also a Mo Ibrahim scholar, has policy and research expertise in fields spanning the political economy of development, migration, conflict, post-war recovery and governance in Africa.

This year’s independence celebrations will kick off on Thursday, July 18th with the 14th edition of the Golden Image Award. On Friday, July 19th at noon, a Thanksgiving and Intercessory Service for Muslims will take place at the 17th Street Mosque in Monrovia and at 4pm an investiture ceremony will take place at the EJS Ministerial complex. 

On Saturday, July 20th will be sports day; on Sunday, July 21st, a National Thanksgiving and Intercessory Service will be held at the Liberty Christian Center at Johnsonville. The main event is on Friday, July 26th at the Centennial Memorial Pavilion, and the 27th is Children Socialization Day organized by the First Lady of the Republic of Liberia, Mrs. Kartumu Y. Boakai and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection in all 15 counties of Liberia.
