Statement delivered at the MICAT regular press briefing by Hon. Roland Layfette Giddings, Minister of Public Works, Thursday, September 26, 2024

The briefing today will primarily provide update on the various road projects as well as the Ministry’s Plan of Action for the coming 

Dry Season:
1. Status of Projects
1.1 100-days Maintenance Intervention on Major Roads
Western Corridor: Brewerville to Gbao; Gbao to Bopolu
North Western Corridor: Salayea to Voinjama; Voinjama to Foya; Foya to Mendikorma
South Eastern Corridor: Tappita to Zwedru; Zwedru to Kanweaken; Pleebo to Barclayville
Coastal Corridor: Buchanan to Saturday Town; Saturday Town to Cestos Junction; Cestos Junction to ITI; ITI to Greenville


1.2 Ongoing Construction &Rehabilitation Works on Major Roads
1.2.1 Gbarnga to Salayea: Progress stands at 91% with 67km paved out of the 81km (Mentioned steps taken so far with MFDP and MPW to remedy the situation
1.2.2 Ganta to Sanniquellie (37km): The project is 100% completed and dedication ceremony is still pending
1.2.3 Sanniquellie to Logatuo (47.1km): The total average physical progress is put at 85% with about 43km paved with asphalt out of the 47.1km
1.2.4 Ganta to Saclepea (39km): The total average physical progress is 53.30% and active works will resume on the corridor this dry season
1.2.5 Saclepea to Tappita (61km): The total average physical progress is 50% while about 19km has been paved with asphalt
1.2.6 Tappita to Toe Town (40km): Active works on the corridor will commence this dry season as the biodiversity study report, which stalled the commencement of the works has been submitted to the World Bank for review and approval
1.2.7 Toe Town (Ivory Coast Border) to Zwedru (85km): the procurement processes for recruitment of contractor and monitoring & supervision consultant ongoing; and works are projected to commence hopefully this dry season
1.2.8 Zwedru to John Davis Town (48.5km): Preliminary engineering design report submitted and under review by the Ministry
1.2.9 John Davis Town to Putuken (50km):

The procurement process for the Supervision Consultant is ongoing (Technical evaluation completed and financial evaluations completed) and awaiting the next stage of procurement process

Finalization of detailed design ongoing
1.2.10 Putuken to Kelipo (11.5km): Finalization of detailed design completed and civil works will commence this dry season
1.2.11 Kelipo to Fish Town (20km): The Physical progress is 85.16% completed with 20km paved with binder course
1.2.12 Barclayville to Sass Town to Klowne: Detailed design ongoing as well as the finalization of the procurement process to hire the contractor. Civil works are projected to commence this dry seaon
1.2.13 RIA Road Project (45km): Overall total works progress is 44% and about 20km has been paved. Works on the remaining unpaved part of the road and the bridge construction will commence this dry season
1.2.14 ELWA Junction to Coca Cola (6.1km): The road is 100% completed with some auxiliary works to be completed

2. Plan of Action for this Dry Season


2.1 City Streets Maintenance and Patching
We are currently finalizing the procurement processes that will see maintenance intervention on various roads and streets in Monrovia through asphalt patching and pavement surface conditioning. Some of the areas targeted for the streets patching include: Mombo Town Road (including to Beer Factory, Stockton Creek, Manco Junction, Vicky Bakery, Graceland Clinic, Duala Mansion, etc.); Redlight to Caldwell Bridge intersection, Stockton Creek to Bong Mine Bridge, Logan Town Broad Street, etc.; Johnson Street to Freeport, Benson & Center Streets Intersection, Benson & Gurley Streets Intersection, Mechlin Street, etc.; Jallah Town Road, Sinkor streets, SKD Boulevard Road, etc.
Some community roads will also see some intervention on them including the Chicken Soup Factory Road


2.2 Zoning & Demolition Exercise


2.3 Overpass Bridges: Construction work on the overpass bridges to be constructed at the Ministerial Complex and SKD Boulevard Junction will commence in February 2025 and a construction period of 24 months; and China Road & Bridge Corporation is selected by the Chinese side as the general contractor of the Project. The Ministry is finalizing the payment of affected property owners and also carrying out an assessment for alternative routes to be used by the public during the construction period.
