The President of Liberia Joseph N. Boakai, Sr. has called on the media, national legislature and the public to promote peace, unity, transparency and democracy in Liberia.

President Boakai emphasized the importance of unity and stability in continuing Liberia’s development trajectory, as he called on the legislature, the media, and the public to work together to sustain progress and promote transparency, peace, and democracy.

“The world is watching, and Liberia is once again respected among the comity of nations,” the President said, adding, “Together, we can build a new inclusive society that uplifts every Liberian.”

The Liberian leader made the call when he spoke to reporters on Sunday, October 21, 2024, at his residence following his return from a visit to Rome, Italy, and the Vatican, where he participated in key diplomatic meetings aimed at strengthening Liberia’s global partnerships and investment opportunities for the growth and development of the country.

According to the Liberian leader, his travel was based on an invitation of the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), where he was requested to deliver the keynote address at the World Food Forum Summit on October 14, 2024.

In his address, the President outlined Liberia’s ARREST Agenda, with a specific focus on enhancing food production and ensuring food security, as he called for global cooperation to combat hunger and promote sustainable agriculture.

Additionally, President Boakai disclosed that he held a bilateral meeting with the FAO Director-General, during which both parties reaffirmed their commitment to cooperation.

He disclosed that the FAO Director pledged support for Liberia’s agricultural development plan, “Liberians Feed Yourselves,” which aims to boost local food production and improve self-sufficiency.

President Boakai also expressed that he was granted an audience with His Holiness Pope Francis at the Vatican, further strengthening Liberia’s long standing diplomatic relationship with the Holy See, established in 1927.

The President said the Catholic Church’s contributions to Liberia, including its role in education, healthcare, and human rights, were highlighted during the meeting.

In Rome, the President reported that he also engaged with the leadership of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), as well as officials from the Italian Government and private sector investors. These discussions, he noted, focused on fostering investment and cooperation to drive Liberia’s economic growth, particularly in agriculture and infrastructure.

Reflecting on his recent travels, the President noted the positive reception and meaningful discussions held across several international platforms, including the United Nations General Assembly.

He observed that Liberia’s renewed global standing and credibility have resulted in increased investors' confidence, with key projects, such as a $700 million hydro expansion and solar power initiative, already underway with support from international lenders.
