BARCLAYVILLE, Oct. 22 (LINA) โ€“ The Development Officer of Grand Kru County, Joe Sekpeh, has underscored the urgent need for job creation to address the challenges faced by the county's youth.

Speaking via telephone on Grand Cess Radio over the weekend, Sekpeh emphasized that providing employment opportunities is crucial for the growth and development of young people in the region.

"The young people of Grand Kru are roaming the streets with no opportunities to better their lives. It's a situation we cannot ignore," Sekpeh stated, noting, "The Rescue Government, in collaboration with friendly nations and organizations, is committed to implementing impactful youth programs that will enhance the livelihood of Liberian youths across all sectors."

He expressed disappointment over the high unemployment rates among the youth, calling it "embarrassing" for government officials to witness the lack of opportunities.

However, he remains optimistic that the current government under the leadership of President Joseph N Boakai, Sr. will address the situation positively and make significant strides in tackling youth unemployment.

According to him, the county administration, led by Superintendent Antoinette Nimely, is actively seeking solutions to the youth unemployment crisis, adding that the administration is engaging with legislators and development partners to create sustainable job opportunities and improve the livelihood of the countyโ€™s young population. He noted that the leadership remains sympathetic to the plight of youths who currently lack meaningful employment.

In his message to youths specifically, Sekpeh urged them to avoid activities that could jeopardize their future, despite the scarcity of job opportunities.

He encouraged young people to pursue technical education and other skills to better position themselves for upcoming employment prospects, adding, "The job market will favor those who are prepared and qualified.โ€

Grand Kru County, which consists of two political districts, faces significant disparities in employment opportunities. Youth in the countyโ€™s first electoral district have benefited from the presence of Golden Veroleum Liberia (GVL), a multi-million-dollar concession company, which has provided jobs to many.

However, in the second electoral district, young people are largely left to fend for themselves through informal activities including mining activities, cars wash, commercial motorcycles, and bush-clearing.
