His Excellency Joseph Nyumah Boakai, Sr.

President Boakai Issues Cabinet Directive to Expedite Finalization and Operationalization of the Putu Mining Project

Executive Mansion, Monrovia – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has issued a Cabinet Directive mandating the expedited finalization and operationalization of the Putu Mining Project, ensuring the Government’s interest in accelerating economic recovery, boosting national revenue, and creating employment opportunities for Liberians.

The directive, issued to the Vice President, Ministers, and Heads of relevant government agencies and commissions, follows a series of updates received by the Office of the President over the past eighteen months, indicating that negotiations and arrangements for the transfer of ownership of the Putu Mining assets were nearing completion. Despite these assurances, the process has remained prolonged.

President Boakai noted that the continued delay is no longer acceptable and emphasized that the timely conclusion of the Putu Mining Project is a matter of urgent national priority. The operationalization of the mines is expected to play a significant role in revitalizing economic activities and expanding opportunities, particularly in southeastern Liberia where development expectations remain high.

To ensure swift progress, the President has mandated Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung to take direct leadership of the process and coordinate all relevant government entities toward its immediate advancement.

Under the directive, all ministries, agencies, and commissions connected to the project have been instructed to fully cooperate and align their efforts under the Vice President’s leadership. Key institutions instructed to support the process include the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, the National Investment Commission, and the Ministry of Justice, along with other entities with statutory or operational responsibilities related to the project.

The directive outlines several immediate actions to move the process forward. Among them, the Vice President is required to convene an inter-agency task force within five working days to establish a clear roadmap with defined timelines for concluding all outstanding legal, financial, and administrative requirements associated with the transfer of the Putu Mining assets from the current sanctioned owners.

Additionally, government institutions have been instructed to promptly identify and resolve any regulatory, administrative, or procedural bottlenecks that may hinder progress. Relevant agencies are also expected to ensure that financing arrangements and technical preparations are aligned toward the immediate commissioning and commencement of mining operations.

To maintain oversight and accountability, Vice President Koung will provide biweekly progress reports to the Office of the President, detailing milestones achieved, challenges encountered, and corrective measures undertaken.

President Boakai remains determined to restore momentum to the Putu Mining Project and deliver tangible economic benefits to the Liberian people.

All government officials and institutions involved have therefore been urged to treat the assignment with the highest level of urgency, professionalism, and accountability.
