The Monrovia City Corporation (MCC) in partnership with the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established a task force aimed at tackling persistent flooding in Monrovia.

During an engagement meeting on Monday, September 24, 2024, at the Monrovia City Hall, the interagency taskforce was launched to develop comprehensive emergency disaster management plans and flood mitigation strategies, sustaining the goal of minimizing the impact of floods and disasters in the city and its surrounding areas.

The task force, led by MCC City Manager, Jones N. Williams, announced that the focus of the team is on enhancing flood management efficiency, ensuring community safety, and preserving the city's natural resources.

He added that stakeholders' engagement and interagency cooperation will also be key components of the approach to reducing flood-related losses and environmental degradation.

For his part, the NDMA boss Ansu V.S. Dulleh, Sr. expressed his institution’s readiness to collaborate with the MCC to tackle disaster issues in the city, highlighting that the MCC will be integrated into national disaster management plans, with the Monrovia City Police taking charge of safeguarding tools for clearing the city's drainage systems.

Also, the EPA Deputy Executive Director, Dweh Siehwloh Boley, Sr. commended the establishment of the city task force and stressed the importance of regular roundtable discussions on disaster-related matters.

According to him, the EPA can address many environmental challenges facing the city and should be involved beyond flood events.

It can be recalled that severe flooding recently occurred in Monrovia and its environs, including the Monrovia City Hall community amid the rainy season. The MCC is actively addressing concerns about the situation and the potential displacement of numerous residents.
