MONROVIA, June 17 (LINA) – Public Works Minister, Roland Giddings, has reemphasized the commitment of the Boakai-led government to paving roads leading to county capitals across Liberia.
Minister Giddings stated that the accessibility of road corridors leading to the various county capitals have been made possible as the result of the US$22 million road maintenance contract signed with various contractors.
The Public Works minister made the disclosure Monday during a public hearing with members of the Senate Committee on Public Work held in the Senate Chamber on Capitol Hill.
He disclosed that out of the US$22 million allocated for road pavement, only US$8.9 million has been spent on the roads leading to the capitals of various counties as part of President Joseph N. Boakai’s 100-day deliverables.
The MPW head further said that the US$22 million road maintenance contract will last for two years and will ensure that Liberians have access to roads across the 15 political subdivisions.
Minister Giddings stressed that the Ministry of Public Works will ensure the maintenance of roads across the country will be prioritized seriously.
According to him, the Ministry is currently reviewing past contracts that have not been completed.
Meanwhile, the MPW boss disclosed that to maintain major roads around the country, the Ministry will ensure that the zoning laws are enforced to forbid people from building in alleys and on sewage lines.
Minister Giddings noted that buildings in the alley and sewage lines prevent the flow of water when it rains and subsequently causes flood.
Also, Minister Giddings frowned on people who construct in mangrove areas which, according to him, is also contributing to flooding.
He warned the public that the Ministry of Public Works will act against unscrupulous individuals caught in violation of the zoning laws of the nation.
