LIPO Launches Intellectual Property High School Clubs

 The Director General of Liberia Intellectual Property Office (LIPO), Garmai Koboi, has disclosed that the institution has embarked on a pilot edition of intellectual property High School Clubs around Montserrado county, aimed at building the next generation of intellectual property champions.

Madam Koboi narrated that at the end of the pilot phase, students will have the opportunity to participate in a National Intellectual Property Competition, with the winning school representing Liberia in a regional competition against Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Malawi.

Speaking at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism, (MICAT) regular press briefing on Tuesday September 24, 2024, in Monrovia, the LIPO boss avowed that this groundbreaking initiative is sponsored by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and Africa Regional Property Organization (ARIPO).

She stated that the initiative will help foster a culture of innovation and respect for intellectual property among young Liberians while providing them with a platform to showcase their talents on an international stage.

"This investment in our youth is about building a foundation for sustained growth and innovation in our country, which is an integral part of President Boakai’s vision for an empowered and skilled youth population,"

At the same time, Madam Koboi highlighted the Government of Liberia through LIPO provision of office space to the Manufacturing Union of Liberia to further support the local manufacturing sector.

She noted that the move is part of the government's broader strategy to create an enabling environment for Liberian manufacturers to thrive, stressing that the government is helping the Union to streamline its operations to collaborate more effectively, and work on strategies that align with Intellectual Property protections.

She cited that this provision speaks to the government’s commitment to fostering industrial growth and supporting local manufacturing in line with the Government of Liberia’s ARREST Agenda, which according to her emphasizes revival and economic empowerment.

 "And by supporting our manufacturers, we are laying the groundwork for increased domestic production and job creation," she noted.
