President Boakai Launches Ministry of Local Government, Dedicates Decentralization Building; Urges Liberians to “Forget the Past and Turn on the Light”

Executive Mansion, Monrovia –  President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has officially launched the Ministry of Local Government and dedicated the newly constructed Joseph Nyuma Boakai Decentralization Building, marking a significant milestone in Liberia’s ongoing decentralization efforts.

The establishment of the Ministry represents a major step in the full implementation of the Local Government Act of September 19, 2018, which provides the legal and regulatory framework for advancing decentralization and strengthening local governance. The initiative is aimed at ensuring that development priorities are locally driven and that citizens across Liberia have greater opportunities to participate in decision-making processes.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Boakai called on Liberians to move beyond the past and focus on building a stronger future. 
Reflecting on Liberia’s national journey, the President revisited his enduring message: “Think Liberia, Love Liberia, Build Liberia.”

“At that time, Liberia was 168 years old, and I asked a simple but profound question: Are we where we should be?” the President recalled. He averred that, “Today, as our country approaches 179 years, we must ask ourselves that same question again. But we are not here to dwell on the past. As I always say, do not curse the darkness—turn on the light.”

President Boakai emphasized that decentralization is central to his Administration’s vision of inclusive governance, noting that empowering local authorities will enhance accountability and bring government closer to the people.

The President also paid tribute to traditional leaders, including chiefs and elders, who continue to play a vital role in maintaining peace and resolving conflicts in their communities despite limited recognition and support.

Noted the President, “They hold this country together in many ways, yet often lack the dignity and benefits they deserve. Today, we honor and appreciate them,”

Highlighting the need for a shift in national mindset, President Boakai urged Liberians to reject hardship as a norm and to aspire for better living conditions.

“Our people deserve safe drinking water, good roads, reliable electricity, quality education, and a healthy environment and that is why we were elected,” affirming, “that is what we are committed to delivering.”

The President commended the Minister of Local Government, the National Legislature, and development partners for their support, noting that genuine commitment attracts meaningful partnerships.

Dedicating the JNB Decentralization Building, President Boakai expressed pride in the new facility while stressing the importance of replicating such development initiatives across the country.

“Monrovia is not Liberia,” he declared,” stressing, “Every Liberian, everywhere, deserves improved living conditions and equal access to opportunities.”

He further acknowledged that while some policy decisions by his Administration may appear difficult, they are necessary to ensure long-term national progress, particularly in improving infrastructure and environmental conditions.

In closing, President Boakai encouraged public officials to remain focused and receptive to constructive criticism while staying committed to national development goals.

“We must listen, but we must not be distracted. Like a traveler who ignores barking dogs to reach his destination, we must stay the course and move forward,” he admonished.
