MONROVIA, Aug.17 (LINA) - The Orator of Liberia’s 177^th Independence Day Celebration Dr. Robtel Neajea Pailey, has expressed her appreciation over the Government of Liberia's decision to reconstitute the leadership of the office for the establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court.

In a social media post Dr. Pailey wrote: "I enthusiastically welcome the Liberian Government's decision to reconstitute the leadership of the Office of War and Economic Crimes Court."

She however added, “During my 26 July Independence Day National Oration, I was merely echoing concerns previously expressed by Liberian civil society actors who have been in the trenches for decades fighting for war-era accountability and justice."

She added: "This is a hard-won victory for Liberia, I only hope that the person who is eventually selected to lead the Office serves with competence and integrity."

It can be recalled that during the 177^th Independence Day celebration, Dr. Pailey called for the withdrawal of the appointment of the head of the War and Economic Crimes Court, citing conflict of interest.

She claimed that the named Executive Director had served as a legal advisor to some individuals accused of War and Economic Crimes.

On Thursday August 15, 2024, the government announced that President Joseph N. Boakai, Sr., has constituted a committee to vet and recruit candidates for the post of Executive Director of the Office for the Establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court.

The President’s decision, according to a statement, stems from his desire to ensure that the process leading to the establishment of War and Economic Crimes Courts in Liberia is subjected to open and broad-based public scrutiny.
