MICAT Hosts Inaugural Meeting to Formalize the Blogger Association of Liberia: Advancing Digital Media and National Branding
The Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism (MICAT) has taken a historic step toward empowering Liberia’s digital media landscape by hosting the inaugural meeting to formalize the Blogger Association of Liberia (BAL).
The event, held on August 1, 2025 brought together the leadership of the Blogger Association of Liberia (BAL), prominent bloggers, digital content creators, and officials of the ministry to discuss the framework for a unified and professional blogging community in Liberia.
A Step toward Digital Empowerment
With the rapid growth of digital media, bloggers and online journalists play a crucial role in shaping public opinion, promoting transparency, and fostering national discourse. Recognizing this influence, MICAT spearheaded this initiative to establish a structured association that will:
- Promote ethical blogging standards – Ensuring accuracy, fairness, and responsible content creation.
- Advocate for bloggers’ rights – Protecting freedom of expression while upholding legal and professional guidelines.
- Provide training and capacity-building – Enhancing digital media skills through workshops and collaborations.
- Foster partnerships – Connecting bloggers with government, private sector, and international organizations for sustainable growth.
- Key Highlights from the Meeting
The gathering featured insightful discussions on:
- A review of draft constitution and legal framework of the Blogger Association of Liberia.
- Election procedures for the association’s leadership.
- Collaborative opportunities between bloggers and MICAT to promote Liberia’s national brand, cultural and tourism sectors.
- Challenges faced by bloggers, including access to information, monetization, and cyber security.
Hon. Maylouisa Noel Hill, Assistant Minister for New Media and National Branding, emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting a free, responsible, and innovative digital media space. “Bloggers are key stakeholders in Liberia’s information ecosystem. The ministry will ensure that the association voice is heard, their work is recognized, and their contributions align with national development goals,” she stated.
Next Steps:
Following this inaugural meeting, a technical committee will be set up to review the association’s current structure, bylaws and membership guidelines. A nationwide call for bloggers to join will be announced soon, leading to the signing of an MoU between MICAT and the BAL to establish the roles and responsibilities of both parties.
